All participating teachers will receive training provided by Oxford University Press. The teachers’ efforts will be assisted by the consultant throughout the period of project implementation. In order to ensure satisfactory learning outcomes and effective delivery of the programme, regular monitoring and supportive sessions will be carried out bi-monthly. In addition, we will provide parent’s training workshops to facilitate home-school cooperation and to provide parents with fundamental knowledge of the programme.

In order to facilitate learning and teaching, one-on-one pre-assessments will be carried out before students starting their lessons in Primary 1 so as to determine the group best suited the students’ abilities to the commencement of the programme. On-going assessments will also be carried out regularly to monitor students’ progress and necessity to be re-grouped.

The whole Phonics programme will last for 3 years. All the materials will be divided into 3 sets. In the first year, students will learn the first set of Speed Sound which they will learn to read words using sound blending and practice writing the letters and sounds by saying the sounds and graphemes. Once students can read and blend all the Set 1 sounds into words, students practise sounding out the sounds they have learnt and comprehend the sentences. Students will then go on to learn Set 2 of the Speed Sounds with continuous revision of the sounds they have learnt in previous lessons. The phonics knowledge required for each storybook is taught before the story is read. Students are prepared for every text so they have early success in reading. The Get Writing Books go hand in hand with the storybooks and they help children use their phonics knowledge to write simple sentences and compose texts based on pictures and discussion prompts.

At the beginning of the second year, students will revise the speed sounds and blending intensively before they go on to learn the remaining Set 2 sounds. Once students can read and blend all these Set 1 and 2 sounds into words, they then read the different sets of storybooks and start the accompanying Get Writing Books.

In the third year, students are taught to read the Set 3 Speed Sounds where they recognize and read alternative spellings of the same sound. Students will be given ample practice to read and spell words in order to integrate all the Speed Sounds Sets 1 to 3. Once students can read and blend these sounds into words, they then read the leveled storybooks and use the accompanying Get Writing Books.

The whole programme aims to allow students to learn English at an early stage in an effective and fun way though Read Write Inc. by Oxford and other appropriate English titles. It is also to help children build and develop an initial interest and confidence towards the English language by strengthening their four skills in English within their daily school environment.
